The surfers were out today

by SeasideMan @ 31/03/08 - 10:13:46

surfers

A bit of warm weather and some reasonably strong winds in the right direction and the VW Camper vans start rolling up to the front and the long-haired, wet-suited lads climb out to do their thing. Why do they all drive VW Campers though? And how come they are all so thin? What do they do for the rest of the week? So many questions.

The sailing enthusiasts will be next. The fishermen have never been away and even at the coldest times there still a few hardy surfers. A few either bold or blasé swimmers have been around during even the worst weather, but I don’t expect to see them in large numbers until at least June. I will of course be a regular swimmer once it’s warm enough.

Cheers, Tom.

...because you can fit your surfboard inside your VW Camper...

I'm aware of that thanks, but there are hundreds of other types of camper van out there that you can get surfboards in. For some reason, that one got labelled as the trendy one and all the surfers had to have one of those. I almost bought a camper van myself a while back and for what they are, the VWs are tremendously over-priced. You get far more for your money with a different make.

The trendy one to have is the one with wooden parts like an old Morris Traveller, which is referred to in 50s pop as a woody. Nowadays it may have other meanings...

hehe - woody certainly has other connotations :-)

There's one of those parked in front of my house right now, but unfortunately the waves are a little on the small side. Are you a surfer?

I used to body-surf in Hong Kong about 45 years ago... Big Wave Bay and Shek-O were the favourite beaches.

Does body surfing mean without a board? That must be difficult.

Yes, you use yourself as the board. As long as you use flippers (beg your pardon, scuba guys, I meant fins) you can go fast enough to ride the wave. I used to have great stomach muscles back then!

Yes, I can see that you'd need a pretty good stomach. Far easier with a board, probably.
