You should just be able to make it out in the above picture if you click on it for the larger version. I like being able to see it, because it reminds me that something is actually being done that isn’t just burning fossil fuels or nuclear. Wind power produces no waste.
I remember it being a great moment 11 years ago when the Tories finally got ousted from power and Tony Blair took over. But I soon got sick of his permanent grin and he seemed like the sort of person who would smile at you as he plunged a dagger into your chest. Then came the Iraq war and any last vestige of respect for him was totally lost for many of us. And it seems Gordon Brown is going the two-faced hypocritical route too. Consider this article from The Guardian from December 10th 2007:
“Wind energy to power UK by 2020, government says”
http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2007/dec/10/politics
“Thousands of new offshore wind turbines could power every home in Britain by 2020, the government announced today, as it set out new wind-energy plans.
John Hutton, the business secretary, proposed the creation of up to 33 gigawatts of offshore wind energy at a European energy industry conference in Berlin.
He called for companies to invest in large-scale farm development to generate enough power for up to 25m homes in the next 12 years”
And then we have this article from March 29th 2008:
“Britain seeks loophole in EU green energy targets”
http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2008/mar/29/renewableenergy.climatechange
“Britain is seeking to change the rules governing renewable energy targets to make it easier for the UK to fulfil its commitment to promote clean energy, the Guardian has learned.
At present, only 3% of the UK's power comes from renewable energy, but ministers have agreed to increase this fivefold within 12 years. To help reach this goal, the government has started lobbying the EU over the way the target is calculated.
“At a closed session of the energy council of ministers this month, the business minister, Lady Vadera, proposed that British investments in renewable energy anywhere in the world should count as part of the UK’s effort”
--------------
Is it just me, or is there a huge contradiction between these positions? Surely, if the first wind turbine suggestion were done, the loophole in the 2nd one wouldn’t be needed.
And people wonder why I don’t trust politicians.
Cheers, Tom.
