There’s a wind farm at the back of our house

windfarm

You should just be able to make it out in the above picture if you click on it for the larger version. I like being able to see it, because it reminds me that something is actually being done that isn’t just burning fossil fuels or nuclear. Wind power produces no waste.

I remember it being a great moment 11 years ago when the Tories finally got ousted from power and Tony Blair took over. But I soon got sick of his permanent grin and he seemed like the sort of person who would smile at you as he plunged a dagger into your chest. Then came the Iraq war and any last vestige of respect for him was totally lost for many of us. And it seems Gordon Brown is going the two-faced hypocritical route too. Consider this article from The Guardian from December 10th 2007:

“Wind energy to power UK by 2020, government says”

http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2007/dec/10/politics

“Thousands of new offshore wind turbines could power every home in Britain by 2020, the government announced today, as it set out new wind-energy plans.

John Hutton, the business secretary, proposed the creation of up to 33 gigawatts of offshore wind energy at a European energy industry conference in Berlin.

He called for companies to invest in large-scale farm development to generate enough power for up to 25m homes in the next 12 years”

And then we have this article from March 29th 2008:

“Britain seeks loophole in EU green energy targets”

http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2008/mar/29/renewableenergy.climatechange

“Britain is seeking to change the rules governing renewable energy targets to make it easier for the UK to fulfil its commitment to promote clean energy, the Guardian has learned.

At present, only 3% of the UK's power comes from renewable energy, but ministers have agreed to increase this fivefold within 12 years. To help reach this goal, the government has started lobbying the EU over the way the target is calculated.

“At a closed session of the energy council of ministers this month, the business minister, Lady Vadera, proposed that British investments in renewable energy anywhere in the world should count as part of the UK’s effort

--------------

Is it just me, or is there a huge contradiction between these positions? Surely, if the first wind turbine suggestion were done, the loophole in the 2nd one wouldn’t be needed.

And people wonder why I don’t trust politicians.

Cheers, Tom.

They do, but it would be nice to get some consistency every once in a while. I don't believe they will achieve that wind-farm target by 2020 - it's all flim-flam.

Cheers, Tom.

It will always be like that, none of their targets so far have been met, they just like to blind with statistics!!

I agree, so how come they keep getting away with it? I suppose it's because the alternative is worse.

*sigh*

Tom.

Is there anyone that can replace them? I have lost all hope, yet I still vote in the hope that someone out there will actually stick to what they believe in:)

I'll be voting Green again next time as I always have done, but it's effectively a wasted vote. I don't trust any government any more for the simple reason that politicians want power. That seems to me like a good reason why they shouldn't have it.

Tom.

So true, if we had a green party here, I would vote for them as well, but unfortuntely in the local elections there are just the normal ones battling for power!

I didn't even know local elections were coming up. I must get back in touch, thanks for letting me know!

Tom.

may not apply to you or to me for that matter, may just be London yet again lol:)

That may be why I hadn't heard about it then. Phew, that's a relief - I thought I was completely out of touch there for a while!

:-)

Tom.

There has been a lot of talk about it on the local radio, but I have a feeling it will not apply to us:)

Hi - not exactly to do with windfarms but I was clooging lois and saw you talking about beach pollution.
If you want pictures of plastic pollution oceans wide the guys who organised Modbury plastic free town have posted some on yahoo that every one can use. I have posted my pictures of plastic pollution up there too - for links go to www.plasticisrubbish.wordpress.com a photogallery of what plastic is doing to our country is needed to highlight the issue. And as for plastic shampoo bottles - well thats why I make my own shampoo - that and the fact I am not rubbing all kinds of chemicals preservatives and synthetic perfumes into my scalp.

Hello, polythenepam. You wouldn't be a Beatles fan by any chance would you?

Thanks for the links about plastic, I will check them out later. Much appreciated, and I agree that we need to be doing what we can to highlight this issue.

Is making your own shampoo easy?

Cheers, Tom.
