Thou shall have a fishie on a little dishie

But please don’t give it to our dogs! Helen and I have discovered through bitter experience that dead fish does terrible things to the digestive systems of our two dogs. It’s strange because I’ve seen both of them yum down the most thoroughly disgusting things imaginable with great enthusiasm and apparently suffer no ill effects, but rotting fish just doesn’t suit them at all.

But what I would like to know is why they don’t learn from their experiences. When Dan sniffed out the fish in the picture above he immediately tried to eat it and Shep fancied it too. It was just pure luck that I was close enough to drag them away before any of it was ingested. So I put their leads on and took them well away before letting them off again. Dogs aren’t very smart, are they!

I think it’s a type of dogfish in the picture.

Cheers, Tom.

:-)

Hmmm...you've no idea though why the fish died...could have been riddled with pollution...our neighbour where we used to live once brought us in some fish they caught off the coast in their boat...they must have caught them around a sewage outlet, because when we tried to cook one the entire house absolutely stank of raw sewage...it was truly disgusting...needless to say the rest of the fish were quickly deposited in the dustbin...but the smell lingered for a day or two...big hugs...also dogs aren't that bright either...HLOL...cat's are far more intelligent...

It's true that I don't know how the fish that upset our dogs died, but the seas round here are very clean. There are no sewage outlets at all, and we get annual certificates of cleanliness. Perhaps the dog's stomachs just can't handle rotting fish, I don't know.

I think some dogs are smarter than cats. Sheepdogs for example can understand up to about 50 human words or phrases but most cats can't manage more than a handful. Pigs are smarter than both. We lived next to a pig farm at our last place and one of the pigs learned how to open their pen from the inside. That's pretty amazing.

Cheers, Tom.

Oh, yes, pigs are smart...LOL...don't really compare cats with dogs...two very different animals in behaviour...don't like sheepdogs...too aggressive for me, and now fear most dogs after being attacked by a sheepdog twice...cat's have never attacked me except my own when he didn't want to be stroked he hissed and tried to scratch me...got a cuff for it and didn't do it often...LOL...big hugs....

That's surprising as sheepdogs are normally placid. All they want to do is herd things and eat.

I used to dislike cats until we got one. They always used to scratch me for no reason other than that I was close. Our Molly is a total sweetie. As soft as pudding and loves company.

Tom.
