Staring at the Sea

by SeasideMan @ 17/05/08 - 10:47:11

staring

I don’t know if this is just a British obsession or a universal one, but people seem to just love staring at the sea. I’ve noticed pretty much everyone who comes here doing it at some point. Their gaze heads for the sea and the horizon, a distant look comes over their faces and silence descends like a cloak of tranquillity. For several minutes they are then lost in a reverie just gazing towards the lonely sea and the sky.

I do it as well, every day. It’s not just the sight of the waves endlessly rolling forwards and the intriguing flatness of the horizon, it’s the sounds too. The sounds of water, rushing, splashing and roaring and the sound of the seagulls.

If I keep taking pictures of people doing it, it will make quite an intriguing portfolio.

Cheers, Tom.

I love doing it too. I don't get down to the coast often enough though. An inner peace comes over me when I immerse myself in all the nature sounds.

It does bring a sense of peace, I agree. Perhaps that's why people do it.

Cool picture!! I love the sea as well. I like getting into it and on it. At the moment we're stuck with just looking at it. I have a lot of sea pictures on my blog, mine are of the Greek Ionian ( a bit of the med) which is where we are lucky enough to live.

I think because the sea is so huge and because humans are made up of so much water there is a primeval affinity there, we are drawn to bodies of water.

When we had a very large pond we used to sit and gaze at that as well.

A puddle doesn't work, and neither does the kitchen sink full of water - so I think in this case size really does matter.

Thanks. You live in a very beautiful place. I've just been having a look at your blog and some of the pictures are stunning.

I have a little dinghie which seems very feeble compared to your Cat, but it's great fun to be out on the water whatever your mode of transport!

I think you are right about our affinity with water because it constitutes so much of us too.

Cheers, Tom.

Yes, I agree totally...it's just a wonderful feeling staring out across the waves and listening to the water lapping on the shore...beautiful...there are places along the coast where the sea is uninterrupted by headlands and then you really get a feeling of enormous space and power...quite awesome...great big hugs...XX

It's lovely in the places where there is nothing to interrupt the view, I agree. The feeling of space is wonderful.

Cheers, Tom.

I love doing it:)

I don't know if you had a look at my photo albums when you were looking at my blog, but if you did you will probably understand just how much I love the sea as well! :)

I did indeed peruse your albums. You have some lovely pictures there, and I particularly like the Winter album pictures. I'd like to see Sweden in Winter. I've been to Stockholm but it was only briefly and in June.

I'll be looking at you pictures again later!

Cheers, Tom.

In the modern world there are few opportunities to look out as far as you can see. Of course the coastal horizon will hopefully always be there despite what buildings we construct.

And for a lack of features, it's always changing (waves, light, reflections, ships, animals, clouds).

I miss my old sea view!

One of my best holidays was walking from Aberystwyth to Cardigan. Five days of looking at the sea :)

Aber to Cardigan would be a lovely walk and 5 days is a nice generous time in which to enjoy it.

You are right about the unobstructed view too. I'm originally from the flattest part of Lincolnshire and that has exactly the same huge sky and lack of features as the coast has.

Cheers, Tom.
