BT has 400 million miles of Copper Cable in the UK

The cost of replacing it all with fibre optic cable needed for high speed Broadband access is more than £15 billion. So that’s not going to happen then, is it? This means that we will lag behind other countries that already have it, including France, Sweden, Finland, Japan, South Korea and Canada. If we want 60Meg average Broadband speed like they have in Japan, (rather than the 3.2 we have here) then fibre optic is the way to go. To get even 8Meg here, you have to be within 2 miles of the exchange.

I suspect this will come as no surprise to the 13 Million Broadband customers in the UK. How many of them got the speed advertised, I wonder? My “Up to 8Meg” connection runs at 2.7. That’s actually not bad for Wales, which has an average speed of 2.6. I have a friend who only gets 512K.

Cheers, Tom.

I know exactly whay you mean, I am on cable (was NTL now Virgin Media) supposed to 8Mb, not even close to it, I think at the last cheack it was about 2.8Mb.

I have a mate in Germany whose always taking the micky he gets about 32Mb, we have some catching up to do.

Exactly, that's it. Officially, 8Mb is only possible within 2 miles of the exchange, but some estimates say you'll only get that if you are no more than half a mile from the exchange! We really have a very long way to go, but I don't see us getting there in a hurry.

But isn't that the same with everything? We lag behind our European neighbours in so many things, why should Broadband be any different:)

I think the crucial difference is that in the countries which now have fast Broadband, the telecoms is all owned by the government rather than by a private company. £15 billion could be found by a government easily enough (stopping Trident would do it on it's own, or it's 2 months of NHS money) but for BT to do so is a little more difficult.
