The cost of replacing it all with fibre optic cable needed for high speed Broadband access is more than £15 billion. So that’s not going to happen then, is it? This means that we will lag behind other countries that already have it, including France, Sweden, Finland, Japan, South Korea and Canada. If we want 60Meg average Broadband speed like they have in Japan, (rather than the 3.2 we have here) then fibre optic is the way to go. To get even 8Meg here, you have to be within 2 miles of the exchange.
I suspect this will come as no surprise to the 13 Million Broadband customers in the UK. How many of them got the speed advertised, I wonder? My “Up to 8Meg” connection runs at 2.7. That’s actually not bad for Wales, which has an average speed of 2.6. I have a friend who only gets 512K.
