You’ve Got To Walk That Lonesome Valley

If you’ve read a lot of these blogs of mine, you might know that I’m a big fan of old acoustic blues music. So keen in fact that I’m learning to play it myself. Last night, Helen was tired and went to bed early, so I went into my studio and watched some old videos of Mississippi John Hurt playing and singing. This one impressed me so much that I had to watch it 3 times on the trot:

The apparent ease with which he plays that bass and rhythm part with his thumb then picks out the tune as well, whilst singing at the same time, is simply wonderful. I think I could listen to him all the time and not get fed up.

I played him to my mum recently and she said he had a “kind face”. I agree, what a lovely man. Can you imagine how cool it would be if he was your elderly uncle?

I’d die happy if I could play just one piece that well.

Cheers, Tom.

Fred McDowell is another of my favourites:

You'll recognise a Led Zeppelin influence from that one.

What do you play on guitar, what sort of music?

I dont seem to be getting far with it, but i like the Johny cash / Bob Marley sound - Walk the line, redemption song.

I love all that stuff myself. I can do quite a few Johnny Cash songs. Here's of them:

Stick with it, because it all just clicks into place and suddenly you'll be really pleased with yourself.

Redemption Song is well worth working at. Once you get the rhythm right, the notes are relatively easy.

Cheers, Tom.

WOW!
Practice makes perfect!
You ever read Terry Pratchett? Cohen rules apply!

I read the 1st Discworld book years ago, but I don't know what Cohen rules are.

You liked that song then?

Cohen rules:
Older = wiser, practiced, skillful
basically less likely to make a mistake :)

And yes, I liked the song!

That picture is Borth, which is 5 miles North of Aberystwyth. You were very, very close!
