The sea has been particularly high for the last few days. Both large waves, and high tides. The shingle beach here is particularly vulnerable to the strong waves, and the groyne or breakwater you can see in the picture is crucial in preventing sand and rocks from being pushed up the coast, in what is known as “longshore drift”.
Since the whole village is built on a shingle bar, it’s pretty important to residents that the shingle doesn’t get washed away!
