OK At A Distance

by SeasideMan @ 12/07/08 - 12:13:22

When Dan sees another dog in the distance, he goes completely still and just stares at it, and I suspect he’s trying to decide if it really is a dog or not. Once he’s sure it is a dog, he tries to get closer. If he’s on the lead he pulls hard and if he isn’t, he starts trotting over. A sharp “Dan!” makes him come back or stop pulling…but only until we get close. Once the other dog gets within 30 metres or so, he just bolts for it, or if he’s on the lead he strains and quivers to get further forwards.

This is a distinct improvement. 7 months ago when we moved here, he would just bolt off into the wild blue yonder as soon as another dog appeared, no matter how far away it was. The right combination of carrot and stick has made the difference. The moment he runs off, he goes back on his lead, and if he behaves well he gets a treat from my pocket.

I will win in the end!

Cheers, Tom.

Like most of us, he tries hard to do the right thing, and then fails :-)

Tom.

You don't say what he does to the other dog...LOL...great big hugs...X

Just usual doggy stuff :-)

Today, him and the other dog just pelted round and round in a big circle barking like eejits for a couple of minutes before we led our respective dogs in opposite directions. I've met lots of really nice people because of Dan, and only a couple of nasty ones.

Mine, unfortunately, used to attack small dogs...we think it was something to do with her being spayed and the vet didn't tell us until afterwards that she had pups inside her...she changed after that with any small dog...

Oh dear, that's sad. Female dogs are normally quite placid.

Tom.

neither of ours were...one came from a rescue centre the other was taken from her mother too young...bought her from a pet shop in Balham at only a few weeks old...still had her blue eyes...both were car chasers...and one died under the wheels of a car and the other from poison through eating some contaminated meat put down by the local farmer we believe to kill off rodents...sad end for both our dogs...never had any more after that....great big hugs...

It sounds like you were particularly unlucky with your pooches. I'm sorry to hear that.

Our Penny used to be like that as a pup. She would bound up to any other dog as if they were a long-lost friend. Some of the owners didn't appreciate that she was just being a playful puppy, but on the whole they usually realised that it was just youthful playfulness.

Dan is only 2, so he still has that playfulness about him. Most people are OK with it, but just occasionally someone gets mad about it and I have to apologize. The worst is when someone picks up their carpet rat and tries to shield it with their body. That results in Dan running rings round them barking his head off. All he wants to do is sniff it!

There's plenty of folk like that around here, and they wonder why their cute little bundle turns into a neurotic, loud-mouthed ankle-biter.

Exactly. A dog should be allowed to be a dog. They aren't a substitute for a baby like some people seem to think and if treated as such they'll turn nasty, as yoou say.

Tom.
