Kitemare

Another new word is added to the language. A kitemare is what happens when you are kite surfing, or kiteboarding, and a nightmare scenario happens: you are smashed into rocks or the side of a boat, or lifted high into the air and smashed down onto the sand. One strong gust of wind and you’re flying, probably in a direction you’d rather not be flying in.

But for all the dangers it looks like great fun, and is a very fast-growing sport. The kiteboarders seem to be centred at Ynys Las a couple of miles north of here, but they frequently go whizzing past. I wonder if someone drives down the coast to collect them again?

I apologise for the low quality of the photograph. I had to use a digital zoom and that is death to quality photography.

Cheers, Tom.

It does look fun. Isn't it a bit dangerous though? I imagine them being pulled along looking at the sky and then hitting someone else in the water just having a swim.

It does appear to be quite dangerous from the little research I've done. There have been numerous fatalities, normally when a large gust of wind lofts someone high into the air and then dumps them either down onto sea or sand, or into a cliff. Also, running into people happens because change of direction isn't very rapid. They move quickly too.

I shan't be trying it because it's both expensive and takes a while to learn. I'll keep trying to take better pictures of others doing it though.

The currents there are lethal so if they get blown to far out they could be in serious trouble

I know, the mouth of an estuary seems a surprising place to choose for it, but all the same that's where they do it. I hope they have a support boat just in case.

They probably need support underpants in that region!!

Haha, too right! I have a dinghie which I took out on the sea today, but you wouldn't get me near the mouth of the estuary for love or money.

Very wise! I've heard lots of stories of swimmers getting into to trouble there and being lost

Ooh stop it, you're scaring me. There are actually signs up about the dangerous tides, but you still get canoeists there.

Very popular in this part of the world.

I didn't know that, thanks. I read that it's the fastest growing water sport at the moment. Normal surfing is very passe apparently, but it still seems to have lots of adherents round here.

That photo is great. xxx

Oh now that is something I'd steer very clear of!

Looks very dangerous to me......

I'm right with you there, Missy. The fun to danger ratio is too low...

My sister's partner often does kitboarding when he is nearby, he isn't in one of these piccies though, but it has been around for a long time:)

I saw someone being taught it yesterday. They were on the beach and the pupil was learning how to manipulate the kite from a standing position. The kites look massive when you're close up - this one must have been 4-5 metres long, and I know they can get bigger than that.

Tom.

They are quite large aren't they lol:)
