Desert Island Discs

by SeasideMan @ 14/07/08 - 17:12:19

I was challenged by Frankofyle, so my list is below. These aren’t my 8 favourite pieces of music, they are 8 that I think I could listen to again and again…and again. I’ve deliberately gone for a broad range of genres, and a maximum of one piece per artiste. There is a wide spread of mood as well. I’ve numbered them, but they aren’t really in order.

This was difficult. No AC/DC or Led Zeppelin, no Johnny Cash or Leonard Cohen, no Schubert or Beethoven, no Michael Nyman or Philip Glass, no Zappa or Beefheart, no Hawkwind or Motorhead, no Robert Johnson or Blind Lemon Jefferson, no Richard Strauss or Stravinsky, no Joni Mitchell or Neil Young, no Massive Attack or Portishead, no reggae, hip hop or jazz, no symphonies.

1. Bach suites for solo Cello, played by Rostropovich. If I have to narrow it down, I’ll go for suite 6:

2. Iggy Pop - Lust for Life

3. Underworld - Juanita

4. Cocteau Twins - Aikea Guinea

5. Mississippi John Hurt - Walk That Lonesome Valley

6. Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah

7. Brian Eno and David Byrne - The Jezebel Spirit

Indeed - can you imagine listening to the same genre forever...what if you went off it? I saw someone's list once with 8 Metallica tracks on it! (and I nearly included a Metallica track myself)

Thanks, that was my aim :-)

It was terribly difficult making that list...

Good choices. Especially Iggy Pop and Bryan Eno/David Byrne.

Thanks. Lust For Life just makes me jump around like an idiot and has been doing that to me for 30 years now. I reckon I'll never go off it. The Byrne/Eno track is rhythmically so complex that I don't think I could ever get fed up of it either, and then there's the scary exorcism too. Total winner.

Never thought about variety - old school punk was all I ever listened to. Curiously, 99% of the mp3s on my phone are bird calls....for field work identifying the darn thing I can't see to shoot!

If punk is all you listen to, it makes sense that your list would be heavy with it. When punk was going strong, I was into metal and I didn't like punk much, though I've grown to appreciate it since.

Great idea, putting the bird calls on your player.

A few there I hadn't heard. Have now. Interesting stuff Tom. Opened a few doors. Damned hard exercise. I've changed my list three times now! Ain't doing it again.

I found it shockingly difficult. I could come up with a completely different list every day for the rest of my life if I had the time and inclination, but I don't think I'll be doing this again.

Tom, music seems to have lost its appeal in recent years Tom. My hearing's been blunted, and no, nothing to do with moshing at SLF gigs! My life has changed so much in the last decade. Curiously, I rarely give it a thought much. My music is that of the outdoors, far less swear words :)

Enjoying the outdoors is a great thing to do. I love it myself, but i still like to listen to music at home. I'm only a year older than you, but there's no sign of my love for music diminishing yet. My taste has changed though - the thing I like most now is old acoustic blues music.

Thanks. Are you tempted to make a list of your own?

Tom.
