The Never Ending Appeal of Chips

by SeasideMan @ 16/07/08 - 08:56:03

chips

Is there really anything nicer than a big bag of chips by the seaside for your tea? Well probably yes, but the chips are most excellent!

We get many troupes of schoolchildren trooping past our house, because we are between the youth hostel and the train station.

The train station was what made Borth a tourist attraction in the first place, and it is very handy indeed. 10 minutes to Aberystwyth, or 3 hours direct to Birmingham. We’ve only used it a few times, but it’s nice knowing it’s there. My mum is coming to visit on Thursday, and she is using it.

Cheers, Tom.

Chips are amazing. Good ones especially!! And trains are lovely- I prefer the 5 hour train journey from edinburgh to london than the plane. It's a cry back to a far more romantic era...

As long as they aren't too busy, the train makes for a far more relaxing journey that the plane does.

The chips are pretty good at that particular shop.

:-)

If I hadn't just eaten dinner when I took that picture, I'd have been in that chippie before you could say Salt and Vinegar please!

We took the train from London to Edinburgh instead of flying recently and it was a much more enjoyable way to travel and cheaper too, except for the poor souls who paid over a £100 for a ticket and had to stand all the way!

And seaside chips do taste much better too!

£100 and still having to stand is terrible: no wonder far fewer people use trains than could be doing.

Well trot along to the coast smartly then missy, as soon as you get the chance!

1: the trains aer not running from lincoln as they are doing up the line so can get a train directly to london.
2: nearest coast by bus in an hour away.
3: nearest coast by sisterly lift is tooooooo much argh!
4: um, might be going at the start of august :D

The start of August sounds perfect :-)

I hadn't heard about the Lincoln train line being dodgy. I hope that doesn't affect Boston as that's where my mum is coming from tomorrow...

I don't think it does.. but they tell you when you book tickets so she should have found out if that was the case.

Good news, thanks for that. I've just tried to check her times, but the online timetable is down at the moment, damn it.

Chips. Not fries, not frozen and warmed up. Real, honest to goodness chips.

Can't find any decent ones in Stoke. A little cafe in Hanley does real chips.

But the prize for the best we've had, is at the tram station at Llandudno, chippy beside it. The fish and chips there are to die for!

Indeed, "fries" aren't the same thing at all. I'm rather surprised you can't get good ones in Stoke. I would have thought chips were pretty traditional in the Black Country.

Tom, say that again and you'll get a thump :)

Black Country is at least 30 mins down the M6! We're Potters and proud - lobby and oatcakes are our national food!

i used to visit borth quite often when i lived in herefordshire - liked it a lot.

Yup, they do taste better by the sea for some reason.

I love it here, it's my favourite place I've ever lived. It surprises me how many people say they've been here before - I thought it was just a small and little known village.

Hope your Mum enjoys her stay , and gets to sample the lovely local chips .
Deep-fat fried ones at home are never the same as chip-shop ones are they .
All the best , -

They definitely taste better from a proper shop, and the one here is a good one.

Thanks for your good wishes.

I agree. Welsh tradition too :-)

Tom.

Everytime I pass by somebody with a bag of chips I want to throw up...can't stand the smell of them anymore...grease and vinegar...yuk...used to be able to eat them but suddenly couldn't anymore...made me sick afterwards...overload of fat...:)) GBHs...

That's a shame, but health has to come first. I could live off nothing but chips...until the fat killed me.

Tom.

yeek...bad bad man...so fattening!! HLOL...great big hugs...XX

Chips here only once in a blue moon. Home prepared and no fat used.

SeasideManSeasideMan pro
16/07/08 @ 23:20

I'm sorry, but without fat they aren't chips. They would be boiled, baked or grilled potatoes: not the same thing at all as potatoes deep-fried in oil!

I remember there used to be a chip shop down by the station. And I have stood on that station many times waiting for my gran to come and join us on holiday and setting off on the night rover up the coast to Towyn or Barmouth

There are two chippies now. One is in the main part of the village (out of the station and left) and the other is between the station and the golf course (out of the station to the right). The latter is the nearest one to the station. Is that the one you're thinking of, or was there a closer one that has now closed down?

Tom.

philghodgphilghodg [Member]

This one was literally outside the station. Out of the station door and about 2-3 houses up on the left. This was about 30 years ago though!

Long gone then, unfortunately. Those are purely residential houses now. One of them has 2 motorcycles in the living room, and another has a Caterham 7 Sports car parked in front. We very nearly bought one of those houses...

The concensus seems to be that seaside chips taste better. I wonder why that is?
