Smokestack Lightning
The train I ride on
Shinin', just like gold
Why don't ya hear me cryin'?
Ah whoo hoo

Tell me, baby what's the, matter with you?
Why don't ya hear me cryin'?
Oh, tell me, baby Where did ya stay last night?
Why don't ya hear me cryin'?

Stop your train let her go for a ride
Why don't ya hear me cryin'?
Fare ya well, never see you no more
Why don't ya hear me cryin'?

Who been here baby since I been gone
A little, bitty boy?
Girl, be on

"We used to sit out in the country and see the trains go by, watch the sparks come out of the smokestack. That was smokestack lightning" - Howlin’ Wolf

All of the blues is present in this one track. Absolute genius by a total master. This song was incredibly influential and has been covered by pretty much every musician with a blues bent since it came out in 1956. Led Zeppelin, Captain Beefheart, The Yardbirds, The Doors, Cream and Creedence Clearwater Revival in particular all owe a debt to this and his other huge hits Spoonful and Back Door Man.

This record only just failed to make it into my recent Desert Island Discs list - it was one of the very last ones to be eliminated.

Cheers, Tom.

I agree, that so nearly made my DID list. He was 6'6", you know. A huge man with great stage presence. I'd love to have seen him in concert.

Tom.

Lovely photo...loved Creedence Clearwater...I also loved Led Zeppelin but Ray didn't...:-/ doesn't like Heavy Metal but I did for the energy buzz...and Iron Maiden as well...used to listen to them all but not anymore...GBHs

It surprises me how Creedence seem to have faded away from general knowledge these days when other bands from the same era have lived on strongly. I always liked them.

Led Zeppelin 4 was the first "proper" album I bought, about 32 years ago. I still have it, and it's quite valuable now as it's on Limited Edition pink vinyl.

I used to listen to Iron Maiden too, but I don't any more either.

Tom.

Don't ever forget Creedence...made love to it with hubby for the first time...HLOL...and you wouldn't believe it but went into Matalan's when we first came down here and they were playing Creedence...Ray and I looked at each and roared with laughter because it was the same song...:)
He sold all his vinyls years ago because we needed the money and got a good deal and he said he wasn't going to get any more...he didn't, he bought CDs instead...:-/ Loads and loads of them...GBHs...

I haven't forgotten them, it's everyone else who seems to have done so. For some reason, they are thought of as "uncool". I have no idea who makes these rules, but I wish they'd stop doing it!

Bad Moon Rising seems to be the only socially acceptable song of theirs, and that's just because of American Werewolf in London.

Tom.

Yup that's the one the shop played and rather appropriate for making love to...HLOL...I don't listen to uncool or cool opinions...I just listen to what I like...this is the argument I've had with Ray over the years...we all dance to different tunes and I think it's wrong to damn other people's choice of music, which he does and makes no secret of it either...tells them it's crap and they, like me, don't appreciate it...but then he's from Yorkshire and they're a belligerent bunch up there sometimes...HLOL...GBHs

I have the same attitude as you to music, and as a reult there have been times when my tastes have been almost terminally uncool: but I don't care :-)

I don't like people calling music "crap" either. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it's bad. If you don't like the colour orange, would you call it crap? I think it's insulting to tell someone that the music they like is crap. It's the same as telling them they have no taste.

Tom.

That's exactly what I say to Ray...but he just buries his head and refuses to hear what I'm saying...hmmm...love him very much, but he can be the most stubborn bloody guy I've ever met in my life...he's Taurean...they're renowned for their stubbornness and inability to change...My mother was one and she was the same...:) Both were, and still are in Ray's case, capable of turning me from a generally tolerant person into one willing to throttle another human being for their intransigence...HLOL...

Has anyone ever done it back to Ray and called his music crap?

Tom.

Probably quite often...LOL...people don't like jazz very much...mind you he has changed quite a few people's minds at work by giving them a CD to listen to on their headsets and they've come back and said it was great...:)

That's OK then, as long as he both gives and receives :-)

There is some jazz I like a lot, and some I'm not so keen on.

Tom.

Well it covers such a huge array of music that you can't like it all...well, I don't think you can...there some I don't like at all and others that I love...not so keen on the modern jazz players...so many of their pieces strike me as extremely boring...they don't seem to have that magic touch so many of the early great jazz musicians had...I mean there are few of the greats left but not many now...they're dying off rather quickly recently...Ray's favourite still living one is Sonny Rollins...goes on his pilgrimage with a fellow fan he meets up with every year for his concert...:) Now, I don't like him...I can hear that he's good, I just don't find his style of playing does much for me...but went to see Stan Getz in Poole and he was excellent and a modern group of ageing players now who had formed an orchestra to play Ellington's early pieces and they were superb...one of the best concerts I've been to for a long time...tight as a drum and not a man off...also went to see Winton Marsalis and his band, and the first half was rubbish...they played around, were off key and got little applause...the second half he must have had a word with them because they were much tighter, but I was damned annoyed over paying for a whole concert and only getting half...first time ever...he clearly needed to take control of his band and make sure they play well...do you ever listen to Jazz Record requests on Radio 3 every Saturday at 5.30 to 6.30? The guy on it plays some excellent music...all requests but he chooses which ones to play and we've heard some great music on that...worth a listen because you get a really good cross section of jazz music with a few modern musicians but mostly the ace players of old...

You're right, of course. As Carlos Santana said, in the ocean of music, rock is a swimming pool but jazz is a small lake. But I am only able to paddle.

I really do have open ears, and I listen very carefully. I know the Jazz Record Requests programme, but I forget it at the right time: thanks for reminding me of it.

Thanks, we should be due for another one today. It's been really windy, which raises the sand and moisture, and it rained earlier but is now completely clear. That's exactly what we need for a great sunset. If it doesn't cloud over, we're set for a corker!

That is an excellent picture. Very evocative.

Credence are still popular with the young and old a like. "Fortunate Son" was recently used in Die hard 4.0 and old John McClane made reference to the fact it was "proper music".

As for rubbishing other peoples music taste, this is often confused with critiquing music per se. Insulting a band because you do not like it is, not the same as criticising an artist for a poorly constructed piece of work.

Pop's primary function is to entertain and sell. Other forms of music have different attributes. It is these that then get disputed.

It's often an apples and orange sort of debate.

I didn't know about the Creedence in Die Hard 4, thanks for that. It sounds like a joke aimed at the older viewers and Willis' age to me, I must say.

I completely agree with what you say about musical taste too. the very idea of someone who doesn't like opera saying "Wagner is rubbish" is just utterly ridiculous, for example. It's lazy, really.

Tom.
