Oi Mr Seagull! Fancy a Chip?

There’s no risk of the gulls getting hungry in the summertime. The bags of chips served round here are pretty large and the leftovers are avian fodder. They don’t normally get any tomato ketchup though, poor things. I hope the packaging goes in the bin!

One thing I’ve said about the seagulls before (and it’s worth repeating) is that you can always hear them and they are a wonderful and constant reminder of being at the seaside. Every time I hear one of their cries it gives me a good feeling.

I can't help it but I hate them! All summer they've been flying around here where I live and you have to duck down or they place a shit in your head (not happened yet though I guess I've just been lucky).
And I can't understand why they are here there's no water even close to here!

And yes you can certainly hear them, just outside my window!

But not to be too negative they are pretty beautiful and I love to watch them fly around...most of the times

  Yes, they are just like airborne rats. They seem willing to eat almost anything...rather like my dogs.

The seagulls in St.Ives are scary!!!
They don`t wait to be offered a chip, they just swoop down and steal them!
And pasties and ice creams too!

Not keen on gulls...they're too aggressive and make me a bit nervous, but must admit I've never been dive bombed by one but other people have...treat them with respect by giving them a wide berth...all the ones we have around here line up along the bar surrounding one of the reservoirs in the water works...Ray says 'school's in' whenever there's loads of them...or 'it must be holiday time' when only a few...LOL...we walk past it everyday for the newspaper...they're the smaller gulls though not the huge ones...those just sleep on the beach usually... GBHs..XX

  I'm realising that we must be lucky round here: the gulls aren't at all aggressive. Maybe they are just really well fed...

If they are well fed enough then they are nice, but hungry gulls are thieving sods! Swooped right down and stole my sisters ice cream out of her hand! Always seeing them bombing people when am near the sea, or landfill...

Yep, I agree with angelicaupstart about the seagulls in St Ives...I was once mugged by them for my ice cream. It was taken clean out of my hands as I sat on the beach!

What I like about seagulls is that even here, miles away from the sea, just by hearing their wheeling siren-like squacks I can pretend for a few precious seconds I'm on the coast somewhere in my lovely England. And although I live in England, I live so far from the sea and it's beautiful sounds, seagulls evoke, immediately, like nothing else can, the edge of this lovely island.

seagulls are 'orrible. we call them Shitehawks in Aberdeen cos they shit on people a lot in between stealing our chips

  That's a new name for them to me, and a good one. Flying Rats is one I'm used to. The ones round here aren't as bold as the ones you and others have described.

    there is a student hall of residence in aberdeen that has a small gap between the outer wall and inner wall. the roof to the buildings overhangs the gap at the top of these two walls. the buildings have three floors. the gap between the two walls is not very wide but is obviously very deep (being that there are three floors to each building). the seagulls in aberdeen like to perch beneath the roof overhang and occasionally they fall in to the gap between the two walls. you can hear them stuck in the walls when this happens. the building are about thirty years old. that's a lot of seagulls filling that wall up. it's a bit yucky but it makes me happy.

I just got back from Cornwall and we had a funny experience with Seagulls down there.
A friend of mine was eating some chips (what else!) when a large, no, bloody enormous Seagull landed on the bench next to us. It was eyeing the chips and edging closer so Lee threw a couple on the floor for it. The Seagull looked at the chips on the floor and back at Lee with utter disdain, as if to say " two chips? TWO CHIPS??!! Are you having a laugh or what, fatso?!"
It then hopped onto the back of the bench and proceeded to call all its family, friends and hangers-on, until we were surrounded by the buggers, bloody great huge things too, and they all followed us menacingly when we got up to walk away....I was in stitches but poor Lee was frozen in abject horror and ended up flinging the whole bagful into the throng......
p.s I don't agree with littering, but the the poor chap was terrified, all 6 foot two of him ........

  They do look a bit menacing sometimes, but the ones round here won't let you get within about 10 feet of them before they fly away.
