Death Seems to be Missing His Scythe…

…Or maybe it’s just a fashion victim. This is something I’ve never understood. The same people who claim they want to dress individually hang around in gangs of other people who are dressed exactly the same as they are. All the Goths hang around together in their black outfits and make-up, the grunge fans hang together in their charity shop shirts and ski hats, the metal fans are all together with their black Metallica t-shirts and bullet belts and so on and so on.

If you are a fan of a certain type of music and you really want to be an individual, then DON’T dress the same as everyone else. Show some bold creativity and actually BE different. Similarly for other fashions: if this season’s colour is purple, then wear something else.

Better still, be a fan of a variety of music nobody within hundreds of miles has even heard of, like Rebetiko! I have no idea what either of the other Rebetiko fans wears...

Yeah, so many people want to be individual Tom, but then we have this natural urge to belong at the same time. So I suppose this is their strange little way of being different and belonging at the same time, lol

They look like they are from that Scottish Widows advert where the lady walks down hills etc dressed in a black cape except this person has done his own take on it all!

I like being individual I have never conformed to the norm, in fact most people act surprised when I tell them about my choice in music, particuarly as I studied classical music to A level yet I love heavy rock/metal music. In actual fact my music tastes include most things with the exception of Jazz

I like most types of music apart from jazz (though I like quite a bit of opera - and I do like Dixieland jazz) I don't think I've ever fitted into any real group although my GP once told me I was an earth mother type (!)

  Like Opera, Jazz takes a lot of effort to understand. I've only dipped my toe into it's depths but I suspect I will plunge in fully at some point. I don't honestly think I'll ever make the attempt with opera: there is just too much going on for my mind to take in. Plus, I think it really has to be seen as well as heard.
  
  I've never really fitted into a category either. Even in my teens when I was listening to a lot of heavy metal I was buying Beethoven symphonies as well.

In every uni is a student in a long black coat listening to the most obscure music he can find. Think what a dick he'll feel when he looks at a picture of himself in about 10 years time

I usually express my individuality by being me, an individual. I don't define myself by my musical tastes, or maybe I do as my tastes range greatly from classical to rock and all points in between (apart from thrash metal and freeform jazz.)

  You have what I would call the right attitude there. At least it's what I think too, anyway.
  
  I like a bit of everything too, even including some rather excessive Metal (Slayer for instance). Freeform Jazz tends to leave me cold, but even some of that has it's moments.

        I tend to notice the music rather than the bands these days, but one that has stuck in my mind recently is Porcupine Tree. "Open Car" is a delightful mix of Metal and power ballad.

        I just had a listen to Open Car by Porcupine Tree on youtube. It sounds exactly like Rage Against The Machine until the chorus comes in when (as you say) it turns into power pop. Quite a strange combination, and I think it does work. Thanks, I'll keep an eye on them.

You brought up some very good points but I guess it's human nature to not be completely lonely (= belong to a group). Just like Doralene said.
