We Are Only Sitting Here Reluctantly

Dan, the dog on the right, wants to chase the ball that is under my left foot. Shep, the dog on the left, wants to chase Dan. Me, the human in the middle, I want to have a nice walk and take some photographs and occasionally throw the ball for Dan. But, Dan wants me to throw the ball all the time, to the exclusion of all other activities. Similarly, Shep wants to do nothing else but chase Dan, even if it runs him into the grave. Shep is an old dog and really does struggle at learning new tricks. Helen, the human taking the picture, wants to photograph all of us. Success for her.

If you use one of those ball throwing aids, you will be able to throw the ball so far the dog will be gone for ages...

  A fine idea in principle, but with 2 major flaws as regards my doggies:
  
  The young enthusiastic one is terrible at finding things and takes his eye off the ball, so the result would be many lost balls;
  
  The old chasing one has arthritis and if he runs too much he's unable to walk for the rest of the day so we need to minimize his walking.
  
  Good thinking and thanks for it, but I don't think it'll work for us at the moment.

    I have it! Put the old dog on a trailer attached to the young dog, and just throw the ball the normal distance...

I use one of those chucky things all the time - they're excellent.............. need a stash of balls though as I have directional issues along with one dog that runs away with the ball and won't come back with it and the other who drops it in any undergrowth he can.........

  I think I'd need a very large stash of balls if I did that. Dan is absolutely terrible at locating them. If he takes his eye off it at all (which he does a LOT!) he just can't find it. I've seen him go within 2 feet of the ball and completely miss it, and it's bright green against golden sand!

  Treats help, you're right. But Shep is such a sheep-dog that rounding things up comes ahead even of food. Weird, I know.

  They're both lovely boys really. I know I sounded a bit flippant, but about 10 minutes of vigorous running totally wears Shep out now. He hobbles after that. If we leave him on his lead, he barks like mad and pulls like crazy and won't stop. The real answer is to take them for walks separately, but they love each others company.

Great picture, just love your dogs! We are intending to get a third. Lindita and Lupi are little dogs and my partner wants a bigger one for long walks.

  It's funny you should mention that because we were talking today about getting a little dog, a real carpet rat. When I was a kid I had a little Jack Russell terrier and I always liked her character. A small mongrel terrier would be my first choice.
  
  For long walks, a big dog is preferable, I suppose.

    Lindita will walk for miles but Lupi is an old man and his legs give way regularly. Lindita does not get on with him in doors much lol, so he is feeling left out on the dog walking front. We are currently looking for another rescue dog.

      We have the same old dog's leg problem with Shep. I really do fancy a tiny dog now, but we might wait until Shep gets even more infirm.
