Pluses and Minuses

The heavy rain we’ve been having for the last few days (or weeks) has turned the waterfalls at Devil’s Bridge from relatively small affairs into mighty torrents cascading over the cliffs.

The rain was less of a benefit for our two motorcycling friends Colin and Ruth who came to stay for a long weekend. They got so thoroughly drenched on the way here from Newcastle that even after 4 days their gear wasn’t completely dry! That’s the wonder of Goretex and leather. Once water is in, it really really doesn’t want to come out again.

Those are great pictures. I am always in awe of nature. We can't tame it, just have to ride it out, as poor Colin & Ruth found out!!

      I was on the edge of a proper stepped path, but it was as steep as a staircase and the sheer drop was pretty scary. I wasn't really in any danger.

Ah-ha! Now this is when you should be doing really long exposures as the water then takes on an immensely fluid and sensuous form.

  I tried that with the camera balanced on the handrail, but it wobbled too much. A tripod would have been pretty handy.

    I'm assuming that you'll be able to borrow stuff like that from college?
    One trick that I got from my very first photo book, some forty years ago was that a small bean-bag or similar is a very useful thing in such circumstances if a tripod is not available.

      That's an excellent idea! I have some old juggling balls that would be perfect for that. Nice one.
      
      I do have a "pocket tripod" too, I just forgot to take it.
