My Nana died at her nursing home this morning. All three of her children were present when it happened. She was very well loved and lived a long and good life, and she will be missed by many. Bye Nan.

It was the second day of my course today and not surprisingly, my Nana was on my mind for much of it. When I overheard someone talking about “Nannying” and “the Nanny state” in the context of my course and the huge amount of stuff on equality and anti-discrimination, I started pondering the term. Nanas tend to take exceptionally good care of their grandchildren and this is a very good thing, so how come when the state does it, the same term is used but it’s seen as a bad thing? I propose that henceforth the term “Nanny State” should be replaced with “Interfering State”. The term Nanny should be kept for real grandmother's.

The flowers in the picture above were left by a woman in remembrance of her late husband whose ashes were (we think) scattered on the beach.
