The original line-up of Black Sabbath epitomised everything that made Heavy Metal music such a huge musical phenomenon for such a long time, and they were perhaps the first to do it. Metal effectively started with Sabbath and their aim to “make music that sounded like a horror film“ (the band name comes from a Boris Karloff film). They have the heavy pounding drums, subterranean bass, virtuosic lead guitar playing, satanic lyrics, fast tempos and charismatic long-haired front-man with a very loud voice. This version of NIB (Nativity In Black) live in Paris in 1970 showcases these things rather well:

Not to everyone’s taste I know, but their status as musical pioneers is undeniable, and their influence immense.
