I’m Looking Through A Hole In The Sky

The original line-up of Black Sabbath epitomised everything that made Heavy Metal music such a huge musical phenomenon for such a long time, and they were perhaps the first to do it. Metal effectively started with Sabbath and their aim to “make music that sounded like a horror film“ (the band name comes from a Boris Karloff film). They have the heavy pounding drums, subterranean bass, virtuosic lead guitar playing, satanic lyrics, fast tempos and charismatic long-haired front-man with a very loud voice. This version of NIB (Nativity In Black) live in Paris in 1970 showcases these things rather well:

Not to everyone’s taste I know, but their status as musical pioneers is undeniable, and their influence immense.

  I bet you did too! Unfortunately, I never saw Sabbath with Ozzy, but I saw them with Dio (twice) and I saw Blizzard of Oz before Randy Rhoads died.

I absolutely adored them.

My favourite track being "the thrill of it all". Sabotage obviously being my favourite album.

You've got me going with all these greats. I'm playing "somewhere out there" from Insides as I'm typing.

I do have one or two of their albums, but then again I have some Westlife, Cat Stevens, Enya and Iron Maiden and many other varied types of music, am not limited to one type of music.

I have listend to some of your posts and enjoy them, even the ones you have put on UTube, lol. Keep up the good work.

Menacing sky this time... But again, a nice pic...I liked Iron Maiden and Led Zeppelin...wasn't into Black Sabbath quite as much...think I've grown out of all of them now...HLOL...can't play air guitar like I used to... GBHs...XXX

  I've always had a soft spot for Led Zeppelin, but I was never so much into Maiden, because I always thought Bruce Dickinson was such a monumental prat. The original singer Paul diAnno was better, in my view. I'm not so much into this sort of heavy rock as I used to be, but it still gets an airing every now and then. The Sabbath title just came to me when I saw the picture.

Influential is the word, surprising how balanced their music sounds in its heavy metal way - you can hear the words that are being sung too. I'm like rabbit, I own and listen to music of all kinds including Sabbath. What about doing a pic and music combi for Wishbone Ash' Blowing Free - Could be a challenge for you?
