All I can think is that it must trigger some long-forgotten memory. I just hear that piano and my eyes well up. Seriously, this is no joke.
Cheers, Tom.

Originally called "Dirty Old Man", I believe. It really is a great old tune, but I wish I knew why it triggers such an emotional response in me.
Tom.
Ah Tom, it reminds you of your youth. Think back you will find the answer?
Perhaps my mum will remember something - I can't!
Tom.
Good ole' honky-tonk and a big dose of the nostalgias gets you every time !
Maybe it is just nostalgia, but I'm not sure for what. I was 9 when that was a hit and as far as I know, all was well with the world.
Tom.
Ah , the quirky old early - mid seventies , there must be part of you that nostalgalises for that 'innocent' time ?
A song that is liable to elicit tears from me is Celine Dion's ' Fly ' , and I find Bob Dylan's ' Forever Young '
( also recorded by Joan Baez , and meatloaf ) very bitter-sweetly sad , regards , ~ Martin .
( p.s - I made 'nostalgises' up as I was writing , which needless to say probably is'nt a proper word ! ) .
Maybe you're right, I honestly can't remember. It's not the whole song, it's specifically that piano part, which (interestingly) is played by the singers mother.
Tom.
I certainly remember it , and watching it on TOTP , when some of us used to think that the pianist was old Mrs . Mills !
- Martin .
I used to think it was Mrs Mills too! But knowing more about music now than I did once upon a time, I now know that the piano was in the style of Winifred Atwell.
The emotional response it gives me still intrigues me though. There's definitely something deeper here than just the music.
Tom.
You'd need to talk to a musicologist , or psychologist , or regressive hypnotherapist : If not for the 'mouldy old' vocals it could be quite good ! ,
- Martin .
Oh, but I think this actually is good. Jarvis Cocker picked this as one of his 8 Desert Island Discs and I can't fault his choice in any way.
I think it would have been better if they'd stuck with the original "Dirty Old Man" that the record company vetoed on commercial grounds, but I think it still works.
Tom.
Nooooooooooo!!
I shall be singing this for weeks now and possibly even dreaming about this song!
xx
At least it's not just me then! It's a sign of very high quality when a tune lodges itself deeply in your brain and just won't be shifted...
