I'm with you on the wood. The late afternoon sun was on it and this brought out the tones in the wood rather well.

All fabulous photos but I particularly like the texture and delicate feel of the last one

Thanks, Izzy. It took me quite a few goes to get that one how I wanted it!

The end result was well worth the effort you put in to get it as you wanted it

Ah-Ha Tom!
You can tap into a rich vein here, texture, abstracts and the like.
I don't know if you use photoshop for your digital stuff, but some of the close ups can be made/constructed into interesting pictures.
Though a purist at heart, I have tarted around with this and got some curious results.-

I don't use photoshop currently, but I will be soon. The course requires me to learn it, but I'm a purist at heart too.

Apart from a serious amount of fannying about trying to make a silk purse out of a sows ear you can actually do good things. Getting rid of converging verticals, straightening a sloping horizon, getting the right colour balance when you'd set the camera wrongly etc.
Got to admit to getting rid of Lampposts, TV aerials and Phone lines on some photographs which is something I wouldn't attempt with film, even though we had a 1hr tutorial every week when I was at Uni to do just that.
Depending upon which flavour Photoshop you use, I can say that if you use the Full version and not just 'Elements 4/5/6', you will never get to the end of it.
I've been using Elements 4 on my laptop for 3yrs and have Elements 5 on my media PC this last 6mths. I've still to get to grips with loads of their features.
That said, there's no better way to practice photography than to get it all sorted at the time you fire the shutter.

"there's no better way to practice photography than to get it all sorted at the time you fire the shutter"
Amen to that. That's my main focus at the moment, as I improve my darkroom skills.
Tom.-

photoshop is just a digital darkroom. it was originally written for movie effects so it's bound to have some features that are irritating to you purists, but there are plenty of options that are no more or less than what you could accomplish in a darkroom if you really knew what you were doing. besides which, to get a decent effect that you could achieve on actual photo processing, you really have to know your way around PS. there's no single button you can click that will result in a truly interesting emulsion stripping. so sayth the graphic artist, 'k?

Kool and the Gang. I intend to at least learn burning and dodging, but I don't fancy making telephone lines disappear and the like.

To use an abhorrent American phrase,(and you deserve far better):
WAY TO GO!!
I think this is the equivalent to the inner city patois in GB:
RESPECT!!
You get my drift I'm sure.
