I've raised this subject before, but here it is again. Someone just said this to me on their blog when I said I didn't like a piece of music they'd posted.

I find this view a hard one to fathom. It's the sort of attitude that results in:

1. People who can't sing at all entering Pop Idol and getting slaughtered by the judges when instead of saying "To be honest dear, you were a bit out of tune", their mother says "Very good effort dear". Result of hiding the truth: pain.

2. People wearing t-shirts that make them look like pregnant hippos when they ask their friend how it looks and they say "it's a nice colour" rather than "to be honest, it doesn't suit you...how about this one". Result of hiding the truth: look bad.

3. Visitors being tortured with Radiohead every time they visit when instead of saying "I don't like this at all", they say "They are very good musicians". Result of hiding the truth: cheesegrater on ears and fewer visitors.

etc.

It's a mild form of lying, it misleads people and it's also rather wimpy. If someone has different taste from you, GREAT, it gives you something to talk about. Two final points:

A. Life would be exceedingly dull if we all had the same taste

B. I never learned anything from anyone who agreed with me.

Cheers, Tom.
