Helen and I had our first Christmas dinner of the year last night and it was great fun. Lovely location in a small museum, and great company: a jewellery designer, an architect, a photographer, a video director, several artists and several friends.
But on the way back home, the moon was just MASSIVE in the sky. Very striking. I tried for pictures but they were rubbish. I'll try again tonight with a tripod if I'm still up.

Pro i'm not an expert but i think it is to do with its normal orbit around earth which is oval rather than round, so at times it gets closer to us - and that coincides with the highest tides (i think!)

Pro That would make sense if it weren't that the tides aren't particularly high at the moment:

A low 3.6 metres yesterday. Next weekend is another matter: A very high 5.2 metres expected! Tuesday 13th Jan is going to be a monster 5.5 metres. That's the highest I've ever seen in those tables.

Pro The moon is very clear in the sky outside our house again and has been for a couple of hours...first time we've noticed it so early...and the sky is also completely cloudless again everywhere...quite a phenomenon...not a speck of cloud for two days...
and good photo...I've never managed to take a good photo of the moon either yet...GBHs...XXX

Pro I saw your moon picture yesterday - they clear sky is amazing.
I think a really good camera is needed to take a picture of the moon. I will give it my best shot tonight if it remains clear!

Dunno, but she was spectacularly clear and seemed very close to us at around 4 oclock I posted a picture of her.
Last month she seemed very high in the sky which is called a hunters moon I believe http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hunter%27s_moon.
Our sunset was incredibly vivid and went through the whole colour spectrum from deep gold, highlighter pink and orange to red and purple ending with burgundy and crimson and went on for about 2 hours from start around 3.30 to finish at around 5.30.
It was beautiful.
