I have to do a short essay on a film star I "follow" this week, and it struck me that I don't really follow stars. The Star System wasn’t deliberately planned, it happened when the film studios realised back in the early days of cinema that people were following the films of the actors and actresses who, for whatever reason, they liked to see up there on the big screen. So they shifted their practices and started pushing the stars and their profits went up. I find that rather fascinating.

I thought I might have a go at Robert De Niro as I have seen lots of very good films with him in that I also like, including these:

Mean Streets
Godfather 2
Taxi Driver
The Deer Hunter
Raging Bull
The King Of Comedy
Brazil
Once Upon A Time In America
Goodfellas
Heat

That’s a pretty impressive list of 10 films. But it’s easy to see that I haven’t been following him as he has made 10 films since the last one of his I saw, which was “Analyze That” from 2002. The reason for this is that I didn’t like the look of any of his recent films so haven’t seen them. So now I don’t know if I should pick De Niro or not.

Tommy Lee Jones is another possibility, but he won’t really do either as there are large gaps of films of his I haven’t seen, as above because I didn’t like the look of them.

De Niro it is then.

Cheers, Tom.
