Pro That's one heck of a pic, Tom...very menacing and like the poem...just about sums up today's world doesn't it...I've watching reports on different areas of the world on Euronews and one was on Guadalupe...their GDP is 200 million a year!! 56 per cent of the people are unemployed and the main source of money is in drug dealing and prostitution...and another on Somalia, where it was revealed that one of the main reason the Somalians took up piracy was because other countries took advantage of the lack of protection along their coastline rich is fish stocks and literally fished them out so that the Somalians couldn't make a living anymore or feed themselves...the odd thing is...although they have earned millions from these hijacked ships, they only thing they seem to spend it on is new cars! They still live in poverty so where is all the money going? What these reports show is the unbelievable level of poverty in so many places around our world...and the inability of the affluent countries to actually change anything...depressing really...GBHs...XXX

Pro there's some excellent in depth reports on BBC News between the main news reports and especially on Euronews...you learn a great deal about the real truth behind all the reports in the newspapers about particular areas of the world...there was another country too with a GDP of a similar amount with extreme poverty across the whole country...Ray was working it out that in this area of the UK, roughly 700 medium priced houses could be bought here for the amount these countries have to pay for every one of their countries' needs for a year! Mind boggling really...GBHs...XXX

Pro I think many of us have no idea how millions of people around this world live...in Afghanistan the average income is 1 Euro a day!! We live such an affluent life, we just don't know what goes on in the rest of the world sadly...we hear of particular areas suffering from famine or natural disaster but the struggle for survival all around the world is magnified massively when you go from country to country, especially those who have gained independence after being part of an empire for a very long time...the lack of basic amenities that we take completely for granted is almost completely lacking in many of these poor countries...the solution is a fairer distribution of the world's wealth but I don't see that happening in the near or even distant future...the attitude in general, is making yourself poorer isn't going to help these struggling countries, but it's hard to see that it isn't going to make a difference for them eventually, and the affluent countries could certainly learn to live with less...trouble is, you've got to care what happens to other people around the world and, for all the talk by the UN about assistance to these countries, there is so little infrastructure to build on, generation after generation is going to survive as best they can until one is built up and that's not good for them or their countries...apart from the fact...many of the efforts come to nothing when a government is brought down by rebellion and what has been built is destroyed in the process...a terrible vicious circle...GBHs...XXX

Pro I think most people are aware of those facts, but it's hard to really understand what it means to live like that. I think part of the reason there isn't greater will to help the really poor countries is cultural arrogance: "we" bettered ourselves so why can't they do the same?
I'd like to see wealth more evenly distributed round the world as well, but like you I think it's unlikely to happen and that's a real shame.

amazing, how do you do it!
i am going to ask for a camera for christmas (i have the bug after llangollen), whats the best one i could get for about 200 quid (id rather have a slr than a digital camera really, i find film romantic)

Currently £280 including an OK lens. It's a good camera - my Helen has one.
If you are really after a proper film SLR, look on ebay. There are loads of good ones available, and I'd recommend a Nikon. You'll be able to get camera and a good lens for under £100.
