I felt very privileged to be able to take these pictures. It was in my own garden, sat on a stone sundial just sunbathing. They really are astonishingly beautiful.

Great pictures! Last time I was in Cornwall I got some shots of a Golden Ringed Dragonfly eating a bee!
My wife and I were just walking along and it flew around us a couple of times then landed on a plant nearby. When I moved in for a closer look it had a bee catcht in its legs and appeared to be devouring the bee's head!
Amazing creatures-

Wow, I'd love to have seen that! Perhaps you could post some of your pictures some time. I'd love to see them and I'm sure others would too.
Tom.-

Great, good luck!
-
- 11/09/09 @ 15:55:01
Excellent - how fortunate that they stayed still long enough for you to get some great shots.
PS - now I know what your pompom hat reminds me of - you Red Darter you!!!
-
- 11/09/09 @ 17:20:23
I wish I was as beautiful as a Red Darter...
-
- 11/09/09 @ 15:55:43
Ok im jelous now. I took a walk this morning purposly to take pics of these beautiful little creatures, do you think i could find one that wasnt flying at 1000 miles per hour?
Supersonic hyper active dragon flies are not good subjects for photographs.
Yours are beautiful though.-
- 11/09/09 @ 17:21:40
I've never seen one sit still for more than a few seconds before. This one didn't move for about a minute, allowing me to get nice and close in for some good shots. It was sunbathing!
-
- 11/09/09 @ 18:20:53
I used to see loads sitting still at Kingsbury water park near where i used to live. Maybe dragonflies in the midlands are more laid back than their Welsh cousins ;-) Cornish ones sit for hours on a lilly pad too, just never had my camera ready though.
There amazing shots you got, love the one of the wings.-
- 11/09/09 @ 19:20:58
Perhaps I should visit the Midlands then - it's not far!
-
- 11/09/09 @ 19:25:48
oh yes, go for Kingsbury water park or cannock chase, beautiful places.

-

Wow! Great pictures. There are beautiful insects and I think it knows this and that is the reason that it not move. Smile!

-
- 11/09/09 @ 19:44:24
The red spots on their flies are lovely, it was interesting to know what reason they have.
-
- 11/09/09 @ 20:05:52
On their wings, you mean? There must be a good reason for them, but I don't know what it is.
-
- 11/09/09 @ 20:15:54
Oh yes, thank you I mean their wings. Maybe I will find it out.

- 11/09/09 @ 19:47:17
Oh! I've got to show David these dragonflies when he wakes-up from his nap. He has been replacing rotted-out fence parts, for the past week. He always takes a nap after lunch!
David likes them because if he stays still, either in the pool or outside pool, they will perch on his upright finger!
We have so many here, all different colours and sizes.
Our very favourite is a dazzling blue!
Wonderful creatures. Thanks Tom: JW xx-
- 11/09/09 @ 20:08:00
Wow, I'd love to have one perch on my finger! Replacing fence posts is a hard job - he deserves his nap!
-
- 11/09/09 @ 22:12:21
David says that the next to last one,
looks like a helicopter!
He says they are beautiful, and a very intricate 'machine.'
We just took a swim! Pool temp down to 85F now.
That can be chilly with the wind blowing.
I like exactly 90F!
We have had heavy rainstorms AT LAST, this week.
The Cicadas have been going mad every evening! What a racket.
Soon, the water in the pool will be too cold
to swim, until next April/May 2010.
Can you believe? 2010.....wow!
Hope you are having decent evening, with your two pals.
All the news channels and the newspaper are full
of 9/11 stuff. The Brits did not go to pieces everytime London was blown up by the IRA!
They just went to work as usual.
Brits are still very special people.
JW xx

I can see what he means, it does look like a helicopter!
For me, 85F is still pretty hot for a pool. When I used to be a lifeguard in an indoor heated pool, it was kept at a constant 82F. Even that felt warm if you were swimming hard in it. 90F would feel like a bath for me!
When the bombs went off in London on the Underground a few years ago, I was working just outside London. Two of my colleagues were on the tube before the one that got blown up. 4 minutes later and they would have been blown up. They arrived at work and carried on as if nothing had happened.
Tom.-
- 12/09/09 @ 16:36:16
With 90F, I am spoilt rotten! In mid-summer this year, however, the temp rose to 95F and it made me think of lobsters being boiled alive!
The heat made me faint, and I had to go back inside the house!
So, you do see what I mean about the Brits 'carrying on as usual!'
We have to give it to us.
We Brits are in a class of our own!
Thanks for that story, Tom: JW xx-
- 12/09/09 @ 17:01:40
*shudder* 95F would completely stop me from functioning!

Wow, Tom, you've outdone yourself. That's amazing!

-
- 11/09/09 @ 20:40:18
Thanks very much Nancy. We get quite a few dragonflies round here because of the bog at the back, but normally they don't stop. I was lucky to catch this one taking a few rays!
-
- 11/09/09 @ 20:49:26
Absolutely fabulous

Fabulous detail!!!! that wing looks like a spiders web up close. ironic that a spiders web may one day be his/her downfall! although i presume s/he would be too big for any spider web?
Rich-
- 11/09/09 @ 21:06:44
I don't know, but I'd imagine they might be able to break free of a spider's web. Someone higher up mentioned that they'd seen a dragonfly eating a bee, so they must be pretty hard!
Tom.

Beautiful pictures of dragonflies. They seem so close with their lovely transparent wings.
