Squirreling Things Away

I was horrified to discover last night that I have over 6000 photographs stored on my computer. I thought I was quite good at sifting wheat from chaff, but clearly I‘m not! I shall slowly work my way through them and delete the rubbish ones.

The trouble is that many of them are documenting events that Helen and I went to and I simply don’t want to delete them, even if they aren’t very good. I really do need to get much more picky!

The squirrel is a chap I photographed on a trip to London earlier in the year. Click on him to enlarge him.

maybe you should buy an external hard drive and keep it as a modern photo album. or get a private photo hosting profile somewhere. then you can keep as you please

  I do have them backed up onto an external drive (2 of them, actually!). Maybe I should just delete some from my laptop.

Or save on pendrives - not very techy so not sure how secure that is - but it is probably what I would do if I made a stab at being organised.

But just think what it would have been like in the 'olden' days! Boxes and boxes of photos like at the bottom of my wardrobe

  It's certainly better now than in the old days - I'd have books and books full of negatives and boxes and boxes of prints. I have enough external drives to be organised, I just need the will to start sorting!

Oh that is a lovely animal! Great, great pic! Can you remember on my pic from a squirrel, the fur is not long as this animal. keep this 6000 photos, buy lots of usb-sticks and you will happy with them!

It is easy to accumulate so many photos!!
My partner puts our's on disc or hardrive...
as I am not that techy

      I do - they use 35Gb of disk space. That's not a lot by current standards, but I'm going at a rate of about 40Gb a year which is a wee bit excessive...

        I presume you are are making use of an external hard drive....still...you needs require quite a mssive capacity.....I hardly approximate to 1GB.....I DO have an external of 80GB....

        I have my pictures backed up onto 2 external hard drives. I'm considering sticking them onto dvds as well just in case!

    STOP, cease, desist. Once you finish your photography course, take an ed2go course on Adobe Photoshop for 6 weeks. It's truly amazing what you can do to clean up pictures you have taken before. Like you, I began throwing out not quite so perfect pictures, but they were the documentation of our life story. I regret it today since I now have the ability to clean them up. Arm yourself with a bunch of CDs to put different pictures files on. Get the RW ones so you can write over top of your existing files. I then put pics on them according to themes, or according to different years of our lives.
    
    Always, always save the originals before you start cropping and changing your pictures around. Every theme I have has a file labelled as "Original" that I have not messed with. That way if you make a mistake, etc. you can go back and assess why your picture was not a quality one. Hope this helps you avoid a huge mistake I once made by trying to clean my pics up!

      Thanks for the suggestion. I already use Photoshop, and I back up all my files onto external hard drives.
      
      Any pictures with irreplacable memories are being kept, but other ones I'm not happy with for whatever reason are going.

once you have even 'back ups of the back ups', as I undestand, you could easily delete some stuff... like...delete first 50 to 100 pics, and see then if you can live easily with the scarce rest of 5900? Next week, you delete another 100. Don't delete all at once, you might get a shock!
Fun aside, you are not alone with such a problem. But you, at least, share with us your thoughts about it.

  I do have backups of the backups, and my deletions have taken a few hours already. I'm down to 5250 already, but I'm aiming for 4000...

At least your photos are digital , aren't they ?
It's amazing how numbers mount up - I've only had my digital camera for 3 years but have lots and lots of photos. Hard to delete- even the 'rubbish' ones.

But you've done well 16 % less already

  Most are digital, yes. I do have a few hundred negatives and prints as well though!
