Were you expecting that sort of post? 
These groyne posts make great photographic subjects. There is a great range of colours, shapes and textures, and they look different depending on what you do with the background, which direction you take them from, distance, the time of day and light, and depending on the weather. I feel a project on these looming, and it's quite a bonus that they are so close.

If i lean my head and look at it sideways, the post looks like an alligator with a rusty eye.... i am sure seeing a lot of critters in your pictures of late.

I see the alligator too. A while back, I did a series of photos of pieces of wood that reminded me of animals. I must do so again!

Pro Great subject! If I remember rightly from my college days: technically the square posts are called Piles, vertical boards are Sheet-piles, horizontal boards are Waling (pronounced "wailing") horizontal square or rectangular pieces are Ties and angled pieces are Struts.

Great, I will be keen to see the results! I recommend trying a range of exposures: it can be surprising how much difference even 1/3 of a stop can make to a subject like this.
