Some people would call the picture above "over-exposed" because of the bit top left. Strictly speaking they would be correct, but if I hadn't done that the waves and the headland would have been too dark. This photography game can be a tricky balancing act between light and dark, sometimes.

I don't mind the bright bit top left as it matches the darker bit top right and makes it feel balanced. I could have zoomed in a bit more, but I rather like the wide expanse.

All over the world, people seem to like watching the sun rise and the sun set. It gives familiarity and a sense of rhythm and I think must be comforting as well as beautiful. I'd like to see the sun rise more often, but that is complicated by me not being too good at mornings and being on the West coast.

This early:

Dan thought it was Christmas and was running all over the place having a whale of a time. While crossing the bog behind the village I saw this lovely horsie:

There are quite a few of these horses on the bog and they appear to have the free run of the place. I don't know if they really are wild, but if they aren't they have a great deal of freedom.

Cheers, Tom.

I have said before that there is no such thing as bad light for photography, and I stand by it. On the grey day when these 2 pictures were taken, landscapes looked flat and less interesting than usual so I went into B&W and looked at some details.

This had gone quiet for a couple of years but is now in the local news again:

"Homes standing in the way of a shopping development in Aberystwyth could be compulsorily purchased.

Tesco and Marks and Spencer have signed a deal with developers and Ceredigion council to build in Aberystwyth, and contracts have been exchanged.

It is understood three homeowners in Glyndwr Road are still refusing to sell up"

It's all based on lies. It will not "create 280 jobs", it will (over the course of a few years) move jobs from other shops in the town and in the surrounding villages as they are forced to close down. People are not suddenly going to spend more money on their shopping just because there is another supermarket in the town to add to the 3 major ones we already have, even if they could afford to in this difficult economic climate. It will suck money and jobs into Aberystwyth, to the detriment of all the nearby villages. It might even result in the closing of one or both of the shops in my village.

Perhaps it will "boost town centre trade by between £1.6m and £3.5m a year" as the council claim (without justification), but if it does that is money that would have gone to other shops, and other villages. It is not new money.

I find it outrageous that a shop can force people out of their houses in order to increase their own profits, whilst sucking the life from a large-ish area around. Perhaps the council members who are in cahoots with Tesco think they are doing their job by doing what is best for the town, but if that is the case their thinking is very short-sighted.

This is not going to create jobs, it is going to move them around (to tesco). It is not going to create money, it is going to move it around (to Aberystwyth).

The two pictures in this post were both taken from Constitution Hill in Aberystwyth. It's quite a tall and steep hill that, when the weather is good, gives a good view both across the town and across Cardigan Bay. There is a funicular railway, but we walked up. Well worth the walk it was too.
